My Riding Buddy
I am not sure if other families are like this, but my family doesn’t like it when people drive alone. Anytime she saw someone leaving the house, she would volunteer to come along for a ride. It didn’t matter where you were going or how long you were going to be gone for. She wasn’t going to get out of the car. Rather, she would just sit in the car and wait. Every time we approached a crossroad, she would give the all clear when no cars were coming from her side.
I look back on this now and smile, but it used to annoy me so much when she would ask to come along. I would sneak out of the house just to avoid the question.
Why did I do that? I would give anything to have her ask that question one more time. I would gladly have her sit next to me while I drive to the grocery store. I would love to see her face as I approach the car with my grocery bags in hand. I would love to hear the all clear once more.
I wish I were more patient.
This may be why Heavenly Father blessed me with Beck. My little buddy, who asks to come along whenever I leave the house. He just sits quietly in the back while I run my errands. HE does come into the stores with me, which is nice. One day, I asked him why he always comes along. He said, “Because I don’t want you to be alone.” There are times when I probably do want to be alone, but I would never say no to having him ride along with me.
When I look in the rearview mirror and see Beck looking at the window, I see my Nan.
