Middle Grade Book Activity: The Fourteenth Goldfish

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm

I love reading books that focus on intergenerational relationships. I believe they have the power to enrich the lives of both generations. In The Fourteenth Goldfish, we explore intergenerational themes of wisdom, curiosity about the past, legacy, heritage, and the power of story. We truly connect with each other through our stories.

When a strange boy arrives at eleven-year-old Ellie's house one night, she thinks he looks strangely familiar. Could this boy be her eccentric scientist grandfather? Through this bizarre twist, Ellie is drawn into her grandfather’s world of science, discovery, and the possibility of reversing the aging process. As they navigate middle school together, Ellie learns about the power and consequences of scientific breakthroughs, the importance of curiosity, and the inevitability of change, blending big ideas with laughs and heartfelt moments.

Imagine if your Grandfather showed up at your house right now at the age you are? Would you recognize him? How would you spend your time together? Would he find your hobbies and interests strange?

Activity: Plan a day with your Grandpa (as if you were the same age). Write down what you would do, where you would eat, and how much money you would spend. Draw or paste a picture of the two of you. Call or FaceTime your grandpa (if you can) and ask him about his favorite things. Write or draw your favorite memory with him.

I have also included blank pages in case you would like to choose another relative.
