Children's Book Activity: Memory Jars

Memory Jars by Vera Brosgal

Freda loves blueberries so much that she wishes they would never run out. With her grandmother’s help, she learns how to make jam and “save” the berries in jars. At first, she wants to save everything — not just fruit, but toys, pets, and even special experiences — so she can keep them forever. But she eventually realizes that while some things can be preserved, others are meant to be enjoyed in the moment.

Memories are more than moments. They remind us of who we are, where we’ve come from, and the love that carried us here. A simple memory has the potential to become a lasting legacy.

Saving memories is an act of love, and even small, everyday details are worth remembering. In family history, we do the same: we gather and preserve the stories of those who came before us so that future generations can savor them — like sweet jam on a winter day.

Why we should preserve our memories

  1. Memories help give us a sense of identity and belonging. Showing us that we are a part of a bigger picture/story. They remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, tied to family, culture, and community.

  2. Memories can carry lessons.  Our ancestors’ stories often show us that survival, hope, and love are possible.

  3. Memories preserve the voices, laughter, and presence of loved ones who may no longer be with us. Revisiting them brings comfort and joy, keeping their spirit alive in the present.

  4. When we preserve memories, we give future generations a gift — the ability to know where they came from. Even small details (a favorite meal, a funny habit, a first job) can help descendants feel connected to people they never had the chance to meet.

Activity:
Think of a memory that always makes you smile. Take a moment to remember the people, the place, and the feelings connected to it. Save this memory by drawing it in the jar. Write one or two sentences on the back of the jar explaining the memory. Share your memory jars and enjoy the stories that are shared.

Our ancestors’ lives are filled with memories that became their stories. Just like these jars, when we take time to preserve and share them, they last for generations.
